I wish I could take credit for unearthing this beauty of a statistic, but I can’t. All praise goes to CBS Sports’ golf analyst Ian Baker-Finch, who shared it on Saturday’s third-round broadcast. Needless to say, I’m all in on it heading into the final round of the PGA Championship.
What’s the stat, you ask? Here are the names of the three players who have won majors so far in 2017. Notice anything familiar?
Did you figure it out? That’s right: All three major winners so far this year have six letters in their first name, and six letters in their last name. Not sure why, but apparently, the Golf Gods have taking a liking to such names this year.
But we’re not here to question golf’s overlords, merely to abide by their will. Applying that stat to those currently within the top 15 of the PGA Championship leaderboard, the Golf Gods have signaled one of these three players will walk away the winner on Sunday.
