One of the newest Jets, Kony Ealy, had quite the first game against the Bills.
FLORHAM PARK — Kony Ealy doesn’t have a position with the Jets. It’s ‘Where’s Waldo’ before most defensive snaps. Sometimes he’s at outside linebacker, other times his hand is in the dirt, occasionally he’ll be standing over top the center.
But every time, his assignment is the same.
“Penetrate and disrupt,” the 25-year-old told NJ Advance Media with a smile. “They give me the green light each play.”
Ealy, whom the Jets snatched off the waiver wire late last month, has quickly found a home on Todd Bowles’ defense. From the moment he arrived at One Jets Drive, coaches said they wanted him to attack. So far, he’s doing in quite well.
In the Jets’ preseason finale against the Eagles, Ealy came flying around the edge for a sack on quarterback Matt McGloin. In the Jets’ season-opening loss to the Bills, he finished with four tackles, a quarterback hit and two hurries. PFF gave him an 83.6 overall grade — second best on defense.
Ealy’s game-day assignments are similar to those he had with the Panthers, who drafted him the second round in 2014. …read more
