Something will have to give Friday night when McClymonds (12-0) visits East Nicolaus (13-0) at 7:30 in the 5-AA NorCal regional bowl. It’s a rematch of last year’s 5-A NorCal game, which McClymonds won 45-26.

The computer, which predicts the outcome of every game, favors Mack to win again, by two points.

McClymonds coach Michael Peters was disappointed the game is being played at East Nicolaus rather than in Oakland — the Warriors are the state’s defending 5-AA champion — but Oakland Athletic League commissioner Alphonso Powell said he would rather have Mack travel than play a team that has twice as many players.

“As a whole, I thought the games were pretty well matched,” Powell said. “Some of the travel is hard, but (school enrollment) should matter. When you look at McClymonds, you’ve got linebackers playing (offensive) guard.”

Powell recalled two years ago, when McClymonds opposed a much bigger Sacred Heart Prep team in a NorCal game and got whacked 56-20. It was Mack’s only loss in a 12-1 season.

“Depth matters in football,” Powell said. “That’s why you have to factor in school size.”
