Rondi played volleyball as a freshman and boxed as a sophomore, improving his hand and footwork. He now does speed training and heavy lifting three times per week, in addition to his team lifting duties, as he prepares for an explosive senior campaign.

As a junior in 2017, Rondi accumulated 59 tackles, six for loss, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries for the 7-4 Patriots, who made it to the North 1 Group 4 semifinals, before losing to Old Tappan, 42-7.

Despite still flying somewhat under the radar, Wayne (N.J.) Hills defensive lineman Joe Rondi is an ideal recruit for the Scarlet Knights. He’s 6-4, 265-pounds and his ever-expanding quickness and technique has him on the cusp of an active spring. So far only Rutgers, Temple and Syracuse have offered. And while all of the teams are in the mix, the perception is that Rutgers is the team to beat. However, Rondi is in no rush to wrap things up before absorbing all of his options.

“I’m just gonna let it play on for now,” Rondi told NJ Advance Media. “No sense for rushing anything right now.”

Rutgers hosted Rondi for its annual Scarlet-White game Saturday, leaving a good taste in his mouth about the program. Despite being a defender (and lineman at that), Rondi was most focused on Rutgers’ potential big-play offense and the support the team received at home.

What did RU’s visitors think of spring game?

“It was awesome, the crowd was always hyped up when things were going on. It was a great environment,” he said. “But the freshman QB (Artur Sitkowski) had a crazy arm! He definitely stood out to me the most.”

Rondi was accompanied to campus by current and former teammates, and was briefly reacquainted with Rutgers’ new d-line coach, who he’s began to build a rapport with.

“I was with Tyler Devera and Jaaron Hayek in the stands. The coach I did talk to after the game was Coach (Corey) Brown,” he said. “We didn’t really talk about much, just kind of caught up with each other.”
